The part of the evening that is closest to our hearts is the food. It is what got us excited about having a festival in the first place. I love producing food, and Tara loves being creative in the kitchen. Our meals were always from the garden, straight to your plate. Not pretentious or fancy, just wholesome and delicious. When people raved about those ‘bean-like things’, we were always happy that they got to enjoy something they never had before, like roasted garlic scapes.
While we delighted in people being overly impressed with the food, it was a lot of work for Tara, and her mother, Joan. The pie buffet, with over a dozen varieties, or the pickel bar, with all kinds of ferments, truly took all summer to prepare. While the food was simple, the work load was immense. Hence, the two year hiatus from the festival.
This year we are back though, with our good friends Chef Tiffany McBee and Adrienne Jackson. Tara met Tiffany in the kitchen, both contributing to a celebration meal for International Women’s Day, organized by Chef Mariana Brito of Malinche. They hit it off, and fortunately for us, Tiffany is now living in Wynyard! Alongside Adrienne Jackson, long time cook and local Wynyard resident, they created Living Skies Catering.
When they approached us about bringing the festival back, we were all for it. They embrace the same passion for fresh, local, natural food as we do. Their meals are a hit wherever they go!
While the reigns are now in their hands, the spirit is the same. There will still be a cuban grill, pit roasting whole, pastured chickens from the farm. There will still be pies galore, and of course, honey and garlic in most of the dishes. If you are sensitive to gluten, no worries. The meal is primarily free of gluten, consisting mostly of chicken and vegetable dishes.
I am so excited for the meal this year, not only because the girls rock, but because I’ll be able to spend less time in the pit, roasting birds, and more time on the floor, visiting with you guys! It is going to be amazing! I hope you’re as pumped as I am!
